With Kevin Harvick in the lead after a late restart, Larson and Ryan Blaney were in a battle for second, racing side by side when they just got a touch too close.
What happened next was heartbreaking for both drivers.
Blaney got loose and came up the track just enough to make contact with Larson. Blaney ended up in the wall and out of the race and cut Larson’s tire in the process. And just like that, the chance to win for either driver was gone in a flash.
Making mattters worse for Larson, who led a race-high 101 laps, the team made a mistake on the ensuing pit stop – Larson’s No. 42 was missing lug nuts aftter the stop, costing him even more track position. He fell all the way from second down to 16th.
