According to Watch Dogs 2 game director Danny Belanger, the studio decided to not bring back the augmented reality mini-games for the sequel. In the first game, players could use their smart phones in game to play two different games known as Cash Run, where Aiden Pearce attempted to dodge red skulls while collecting as many coins as possible, and NVZN, which tasked the player with battling AR aliens with Pearce’s phone being the blaster.

As an alternative to the AR minigames, players are encouraged to explore more of the city which will reveal secrets and operations that the player can complete to unlock additional side quests. Belanger also hinted at a new progression system, which would work differently from what players saw in the first game as well.

At this time, it is not clear if the other set of minigames called Digital Trips will make the cut either. These virtual reality inspired missions let the player participate in a variety of simulations including using a massive spider tank to cause as much destruction in the city as possible, bounce on massive flowers across Chicago to score points, and use stealth to deactivate generators guarded by robotic sentries.

The augmented reality news joins the likes of another open world mechanic that has already been confirmed to not be present in the final game. The familiar tower climbing mechanic, which has been seen in many open world games from Ubisoft, won’t be returning in Watch Dogs 2, as the unlocking process is linked to how many followers protagonist Marcus Holloway accumulates. Pulling off bigger operations requires a bigger Dedsec hivemind, so earning more followers unlocks all kinds of new things from operations, co-op missions, and more.

Did you play any of the AR games from the first one? Are you hoping Ubisoft replaces them with something else? Sound off in the comments below.
