The video of Maggie the rescue dog was posted to @maggiepotamus_ and has been viewed over 100,000 times.

The video is captioned: “I’m so proud of how far she’s come,” and explains: “Maggie was left chained up in a hurricane. When they found her, she was barely treading water. When I adopted her, she was so afraid of rain that she gave herself a UTI from refusing to go in the rain for almost 24 hours. But after three years of love and reassurance, she’s learned that mom will always keep her safe from the rain.”

Many people all over the world use dogs for security and protection, often chaining them outside their homes, or in their backyards.

Dogs are naturally sociable animals and long periods of isolation due to being tethered by a chain or rope can be damaging for a dog, let alone the potential dangers from other animals with no escape, or extreme weather events.

The Humane Society says “intensive confinement or long-term restraint can severely damage their physical and psychological well-being. An otherwise friendly and docile dog, when kept continuously chained or intensively confined in any way, becomes neurotic, unhappy, anxious and often aggressive.”

The Humane Society also discusses extreme weather and says “tethered dogs may also suffer from irregular feedings, overturned water bowls, inadequate veterinary care and extreme temperatures. During snowstorms, these dogs often have no access to shelter. During periods of extreme heat, they may not receive adequate water or protection from the sun.”

As well as posing many dangers to dogs, tethering can also provide risk to humans. One Green Planet explains that “dogs are naturally territorial animals and when they are confined to a small, confined space, this instinct is enhanced. Their small square of backyard suddenly becomes theirs to defend, so when people approach them, they act out with aggressive, territorial behaviors like barking and even snapping or biting.”
